16 July 2014 / ACHIEVEMENTS CELEBRATED

Daphne Skinnard, Assistant Editor at Radio Cornwall and Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, was guest of honour at this year's Truro High School Speech Day and Prizegiving Ceremony in Truro Cathedral.

Remembering her own happy days as a parent in the school, she congratulated the girls on their ‘remarkable achievements' and advised them ‘to make the most of your opportunities as you never know where they might lead.'

Seventy eight prizes were awarded in total for a range of achievements including general academic progress, excellence in a particular subject, outstanding written English, creative writing, drama, art, linguistic skills, singing, instrumental, composing, business, swimming, sport, helpfulness and sustained effort. Old Girl Marianne Inskip also received the Lynn Green Memorial Cup for her service to the school.

Addressing a large audience that included the Mayor and Mayoress of Truro, governors, senior pupils, parents and staff, Interim Headmistress Marcia Smith said that her tenure as head over the summer term had been ‘rewarding, busy, fun, challenging and all consuming'.

‘I believe that our girls succeed because they are happy and have the time and space to be themselves,' she said.

During the event, the school's senior choir sang ‘Dry your Tears Afrika', Olivia Leather, Elodie Lawry and Bennath Halse performed ‘The Life', Deputy Head Girl Ellen Rodda did a reading, Head Girl Laura Manhire gave the vote of thanks and the school chamber choir sang ‘A Gaelic Blessing'.
