Against hundreds of entrants from across the county, Truro High’s students scooped three top-level prizes and eleven honorary commendations in the Young Art Cornwall Competition.
Young Art Cornwall is an exciting new project which aims to raise vital funds for Cancer Research UK Kids and Teens. Truro High School was the competition’s supporting school.
The success comes across the board with Truro High artists recognised in every category that they entered. Prep 6 Annabelle won a first prize place whilst Prep 4 Maisie and Year 7 Katie scooped third prize places. Highly commended prizes went to Prep 2 Ava, Prep 4 Holly, Prep 5 Daisy-Grace, Prep 5 Phoebe, Prep 6 Jessica, Prep 5 Ruby, Year 6 Scarlett, Year 8 Melissa, Year 8 Sarah, Year 9 Eve and Year 9 Soleil.
The competition was open to all schools in Cornwall, for children from Reception up to Year 9, and received over 700 entries inspired by the theme of “What Makes Me Happy”.
The theme aims to reflect the hope and positivity that the charity feels about the work carried out by its research scientists every day. The charity has made great progress in tacking children’s cancers, which has seen survival double in the last 40 years, and the Kids and Teens campaign aims to continue this work in finding better and kinder treatments for young cancer patients.
Last night, Truro High families attended a special exhibition for competition winners ahead of the showcase being opened to the public today. There was the chance to view their work which had been professionally displayed before attending an awards ceremony with the judging panel, comprising of award-winning artists and gallery directors.
Music for the evening was provided by Truro High’s young musicians with everything from Bach to Fly Me to the Moon.
Thousands of visitors from across the country will have the opportunity to see the selected pieces of art which will be on display for four days at the Tate St Ives.
The world-renowned gallery is home to works by modern artists ranging from Ben Nicholson, Peter Lanyon and Barbara Hepworth to Piet Mondrian, Naum Gabo and Paule Vézelay.
The exhibition runs from 6 – 9 December 2018 and is free with admission to the gallery.
Head of Creative and Performing Arts, Mrs Judith Tutin said: “I was incredibly proud to see so many of our girls attending to view their winning pieces in the Tate; it’s a great honour to be exhibiting in a world-famous space. It was wonderful to see our musicians performing during the private view too. Our girls are given the confidence in their abilities to explore their work before refining those ideas with us and that independence really shines through in the work on show tonight. I’m delighted that the school is supporting this project as it continues to expand.”
Truro High School will be hosting the launch of the Young Art Cornwall 2019 competition next May with a series of free art workshops for Cornwall’s schoolchildren.
