Prep 6 pupils Lucy Marshall, Rose Hallam and Holly White proved their public speaking prowess against tough competition from local school teams last night in the annual competition.

The girls’ speech provokingly entitled ‘Can I buy you a cigarette?’ dealt with the hot topic of the impact of smoking
on modern society.

Truro Prep, Polwhele House, Archbishop Benson, Mithian, Devoran School and Kea Community Schools also competed.

Hosting the event, Devoran School came second and both teams will now progress to the district competition held in Penzance at the end of February where they will fight for a place in the South West regional final.

Head of Prep School, Mrs Alison Miller said: “We are extremely proud that the girls’ public speaking talent has been recognised by the Rotary Club. They spoke articulately about a complex issue that affects the world we live in and it is a testament to their maturity that their argument won the day.”
