The arts illuminate our cultural experience and enrich our emotional development. In the Art and Design Department, we provide practical and critical learning experiences, which develop the imagination and hone specialist skills. The study of Art enables students to develop skill in the creation of ideas, critical awareness and motor skills, all of which are important tools for any creative, analytical or cultural career path.

Our GCSE and A Level results are consistently excellent and many of our girls go on to rewarding careers in directly related industries – including architecture, advertising, film and photography. The department is accommodated in six rooms, compromising three art studios, a pottery workshop (with our own kilns), a textiles workshop and a photographic dark room. Pupils are taught to hone their skills in a rage of art disciplines with an emphasis on cross-curricular themes and ideas development. We operate an open door policy and students are encouraged to use the facilities outside lesson times. The Sixth Form have a specially allocated ‘creation studio’ where they can work at any time.

Our extra-curricular clubs are very popular and extensive. These include Life Drawing, Manga and Set Design as well as a weekly art club. The Sixth Form can opt for an Arts Award qualification, pottery or photography workshops as part of their weekly enrichment. The yearly school production involves the whole department and we are proud to contribute costume, sets and promotional materials that create an exciting atmosphere of teamwork and productivity throughout the whole school.
