Maths Challange Success

A team of four girls from Truro High School have beaten 10 other competing schools and colleges to win the regional heat of the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust (UKMT) Senior Maths Challenge.

Merryn Davies-Deacon, 17, from Redruth, Elizabelle Kwan, 17, from Hong Kong, Julia Maskell, 16, from Penpol and Rebecca Vinnicombe, 17, from Penzance worked together in round one on a set of 10 questions and then, in rounds two and three, worked in pairs on a cross number puzzle and mini relay. Concentration levels were intense but, after several hours of testing their mathematical, communication and teamwork skills to the maximum, they emerged triumphant.

“I’m extremely proud of them,” said Headmistress Caroline Pascoe. “They were competing against some of the best young mathematical students in the region and to come out on top is wonderful. Astrid Hanson and her exceptional team of tutors work hard to ensure each and every girl does their very best at maths and this result is testament to their dedication and commitment.”

The UKMT is a registered charity which aims to advance the education of children and young people in mathematics by organising national competitions and enrichment activities for 11-18 year old pupils in the UK.

The regional heat took place at Truro College. The Truro College team came second and Truro School came third. The Truro High team will now progress to the national final in London in February.
