21 May 2012 / LOCAL PUPILS TAKE ON THE MATHS CHALLENGE

Problem solving was all in an afternoon's work for 60 local primary school pupils when they met up at Truro High School to compete in the 2012 Maths Challenge.

Fifteen teams of four took part, heads bowed in concentration as they raced against the clock to solve the mathematical conundrums set for them by Truro High's Head of Maths, Astrid Hanson, and her team. It is the second time that the biennial competition has taken place and the standards achieved were once again very high.

When all the scores were totalled up, first place went to Truro Prep School, with St Mary's C of E School, Truro, in second place and Marlborough School, Falmouth, in third.

"There's not much opportunity to work as a team when it comes to maths which is why we decided to run the challenge," said Mrs Hanson. "Everything has gone very smoothly and all the pupils taking part seemed to enjoy themselves which is brilliant."

"It was fun," said Mark, 11, from Kea School. "I'd like to do it again."

"Maths is my favourite subject," said Anna, 11, from Roselyon School in Par. "I really enjoyed the relay round."

"It's good to work together," said Amelia, 11, from Truro High School. "You learn to trust your team mates."

The challenge took place over two hours and was followed by tea and a results presentation in the school dining room. The schools taking part were Truro Prep School, Marlborough School Falmouth, Bolitho School, Penzance, Veryan C of E School, Lanner Primary School, Archbishop Benson School, Truro, Probus Community Primary School, Bodriggy Academy, Hayle, Bosvigo School, Truro, St Mary's C of E School, Truro, Perranrworthal County Primary School, Kea Community Primary School, Polwhele House School, Truro, Roselyn School, Par and Truro High School.
