25 May 2012 / HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS CROWNED COUNTY CHESS CHAMPIONS

Truro High School Prep pupils have excelled at the UK Schools Chess Challenge 2012 Megafinal - the biggest annual chess event in Cornwall.

Two - Margarita, 12 and Amelia, 11 - were crowned ‘Suprema' of their age group and have qualified for the next nail-biting round in this national event that attracts around 70,000 entrants.

It is the fifth year in succession that year six pupil, Amelia, has been awarded the Girls Suprema title in her category. Hot on her heels was little sister, Evelyn, who won the Under 7s age group jointly with her year two classmate, Emma and a third girl from another local school.

Three more Truro High girls, Niamh, Melanie and Chelsea, also took part in the hotly contested event, putting in excellent performances. Aged just 5, Chelsea was the youngest player in the competition.

All competitors had to qualify for the Megafinal by winning matches at a recognised chess club like Truro High School's club, which is run by international chess player, Jeremy Menadue.

A total of 98 competitors took part in the event held at Perran-ar-Worthal School, Perranwell Station, earlier this month. Each faced a number of opponents during four gruelling hours of strategic battling, accumulating points for winning or drawing games.

The next round of the competition for Amelia and Margarita is the Gigafinal, scheduled to take place in Reading during July.

Mr Menadue said: "All seven qualifying competitors from Truro High School played with great determination and deserved their success."

Head of Truro High Prep, Alison Miller, said: "I'm delighted not just with the girls' recent competition success but also their commitment to the game. Recent studies show chess has a positive impact on primary school children - improving academic ability and performance as well as their behavioural and social attitudes. I shall be watching their progress with great interest!"

Ends 25 May 2012
