23 January 2013 / HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS HAVE A CHANCE TO PLAN THEIR FUTURES

Students from years 9, 10 and 11 at the school were encouraged to investigate all the possibilities on show, some even had some hands-on experiences.

Many of those attending represented universities and colleges including Swansea and Bath Spa Universities, Falmouth Marine School and Truro and Penwith College. Also attending were representatives from the Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, Coodes Solicitors, Cornwall College Apprenticeships, Fixers, the educational and support service for young people and CITB, which offers careers, training and educational opportunities in construction.

Year 10 pupil, Anna Simmons was immediately drawn to the Duchy College stand where Area Manager for Animal Management, Carol Knight, introduced Anna to a corn snake called Jake.

"I'm really interested in studying animal behaviour," said Anna. "I've got three snakes at home and one of them is just like Jake."

Tilly Lee, a year 9 student considering a medical career, was particularly interested in meeting Julie Monk, the Widening Participation Office for Plymouth University's Peninsula School of Medicine and Dentistry. Tilly was given the opportunity to try her hand at intubating a dummy.

Robin Hunt, Head of Art and Design as well as Careers Co-ordinator for Truro High School, said: "The Careers Convention is always well attended by students and their parents. It's vital we show what options are open to the girls once they have completed their GCSEs - whether its continuing with their education or going straight into the workplace. This year has been a great success with 34 different organisations and companies represented. It's given the girls a real taste of what their future could hold."
