6 March 2012 / TOP PRIZE FOR TALENTED HIGH SCHOOL LANGUAGE STUDENT

Danielle Butler, from Camborne, was a Year 10 pupil when she applied for a place on the language and culture course for those studying GCSE German. The event is organised in this country by UK-German Connection and partly funded by the German government.

Only 36 students nationally are awarded the chance to live with a German host family, experience German school life and participate in a joint discussion with their German peers on a topic of mutual interest. The trip also includes excursions to local cities, sporting activities and the chance to sample some German specialities.

Truro High Head of Modern Languages, Sue Murley, said: "It is a fantastic opportunity for pupils to get first-hand experience of German life and culture and improve their language skills. Competition for places is extremely high and is normally restricted to one per school entered. We are extremely proud of Danielle but, quite unusually, one of our other students, Maddie Wilshire, from Redruth, was placed on the reserve list, so we're very proud of her too."

To win a place, students were asked to write an article in German, detailing their interest in the language and explaining how time in Germany would benefit their studies. Danielle, who plans to continue her German studies to A Level, spent the fortnight in Wolfsburg, north Germany.

She said: "It was an amazing experience. My confidence with the spoken language has grown enormously and I have made some great new friends."

As well as completing a report in German about her experiences, Danielle also did a small project with Truro High Prep School pupils as part of her remit to bring an authentic element of German culture to younger students.

This is the second time a Truro High pupil has won a place on the course. Vicky Hall, now in Year 12 and studying German A level, was a successful applicant in 2010. She is now applying for a 4 week scholarship in Germany with the same organisation.

Ends 5 March 2012
