21 December 2012 / POPPY'S SCHOLARSHIP PRIDE
Awarded for her "character and achievement", Poppy's scholarship is one of about 20 available from the fund nationwide, with applications depending upon the parent's service record, the applicant's own academic record and evidence of other non-academic qualities such as responsibility and leadership.
The fund, set up after the death of Lord Kitchener in 1916, has provided scholarships for the sons and daughters of men and women who have served or are serving in the armed forces.
Poppy, whose parents have both served in the Royal Navy, had to submit a written application before being selected for an interview.
She said: "The award will be a great help in light of tuition fees and the amount of books needed for my course. I'm also looking forward to meeting other past and present Kitchener Scholars at my first Kitchener dinner at The Honourable Society of Lincoln's Inn in London next March. I'm very proud to be part of such a great organisation."
