31 March 2009 / Six County Championship Titles For High School

The Year 8 teams have won both the netball and hockey championships which gives them the "double", the title that the Year 9 teams won earlier in the season.

The Year 8 netball team beat Wadebridge, Hayle, Humphry Davy and Falmouth schools very convincingly in the qualifying stage - scoring an incredible 54 points and conceding only 2. A force to contend with, this meant that they qualified for the finals in first place. They then went on to win the county title beating Redruth 8-3, Mounts Bay 10-3, Helston 10-5 and Bude 6-2.

The Year 10 hockey team have also become county champions for the third year in succession. The squad qualified for the final after winning a very close semi final against Richard Lander. The girls started well in the final against Penair School but, despite piling on the pressure, still hadn't scored after several chances. Penair had a fast break and scored 2 goals either side of half time. The Truro High girls did not give up and one of their team, Shona Harris, managed to score from a penalty corner. Gabby Kurdyla converted another of Shona's strikes to put the school back in the game. At two all, the pressure was on and just before the final whistle was blown, Gabby scored again securing the county title.

Head of PE at Truro High School, Deb Freeman, said she was absolutely delighted with the girls' achievements to date.

She said: "The school's hockey and netball teams have racked up 6 county titles this season. They all work really hard and are always enthusiastic and determined. They certainly deserve their success."

The U18 Indoor Hockey team finished runners up in their county tournament. They beat Newquay Tretherras and Truro School but lost to Truro College 3-2 to finish a credible second overall.
