26 August 2008 / More Top Marks For Truro High School
Spirits were understandably high and quite a few girls, and their parents, shed tears of delight.
Fatima Dalal, one of two High School girls who achieved 11 A* grades, summed up the atmosphere, she said: "I telephoned my dad at work to tell him my results and I know he was pleased but I couldn't hear what he was saying because of the noise, everyone is so happy and lots of people were screaming."
Catrin Jones took older sister, Jess, with her to collect her results. Jess is a Truro High old girl who has just graduated from Magdalen College, Oxford, with a first in Philosophy, Politics and Economics. Following in her footsteps Catrin achieved four A* and seven A grades.
"I'm ecstatic!" said Catrin. "I've really enjoyed school so far and now I'm really excited about moving in to Sixth Form here."
Proud mum Mandy Burnett, whose daughter, Demi, achieved nine A*s and two A grades, said: "This school is absolutely fantastic; the girls are given 100% encouragement. Demi has known she wanted to be a mathematician since she was eight and these results have put her well on the way to achieving that ambition."
Deputy Head Teacher, Fiona Matthew, said: "The girls have worked so hard and I think the excellent results reflect this. You only have to see all these happy faces and hear all the noise - the shouts and screams tell the story of how happy the girls are and I think some of the parents are even happier."
Mrs Matthew explained that the school had scored a 98% pass rate of A* to C grades; 83% of the exams had been graded either B or above and all but one of the girls had achieved the 'magic five' A* to C passes including both Maths and English.
