1 June 2011 / HEAD START FOR TRURO HIGH'S ATHLETICS TEAMS

Year 7 to Year 10 pupils took part in the Track and Field Cup held at Carn Brea on Wednesday 11th May 2011. Competing against up to thirteen other schools from around Cornwall, the junior girls finished in a very commendable 3rd place, missing out on the 2nd place position by 2 points.

Notable performances included Molly Butler with the shot putt, Yolande Barnsley in the 1500m and Holly Hick in the high jump who all achieved 18 points and Harriet Lord in the 1500m who earned 22 points for the team.

The intermediate girls became champions with 269 points. High scorers included Laura Butler with the shot putt, Milly Deacon in the high jump and Saskia Packer and Milly Deacon once again in the 300m. The girls will travel to Exeter for the Regional Finals in June.

There were also some absolutely outstanding performances at the County Championships at Par on Sunday 15th May 2011.

Gold medals and county titles went to Amber Thompson in the U13 shot putt, Mia Cockroft in the U13 discus, Ellis Davy in the U15 high jump, Holly Hick in the U15 shot putt, Saskia Packer in the U17 200m and 300m and the U15 relay team (Ellis Davy, Holly Hick, Patricia Longthorpe and Harriet Lord).

Truro High School's top athlete, Jordanna Morrish, not only won the U17 80m hurdles and high jump, but in doing so broke the 32 year county high jump record setting a new height of 1.65m.

To add to the school's string of successes, Head of PE, Mrs Kat Barbery-Redd, won the County Senior Women's Javelin with a throw of 33.91 metres.

She said: "I am extremely proud of all our athletes and am very excited about the prospect of several county champions in our midst!

"Many of our girls are putting in exceptional performances despite only having trained at school, especially considering that the county championships are open to athletics clubs as well as schools.

"Our school sports clubs are extremely popular, and the success we have had is testament to the teachers who have worked so hard running them over the years."
