Last week we welcomed the Royal Navy as part of a series of workshops designed to test our Prep 6, Year 7 and 8 girls communication, teamwork and linking skills.
As part of the events with the Royal Navy representatives, we were also delighted to welcome back alumna, Natasha Pulley (Basset), who attended Truro High Senior School in the 80s. Natasha is now a Royal Navy Warrant Officer (WO) and was awarded an MBE from the Queen’s Birthday Honours list in 2019. WO Pulley heads up the PT Department at HMS Raleigh and was awarded her title in recognition of her extensive voluntary work, her selfless determination, loyalty and drive during her career spanning five decades.
Throughout her career, WO Pulley has raised money and supported numerous charities, and has represented the Navy at various athletics events. In 1990 she was the first female member to run in the annual Royal Navy Field Gun Competition and in 2015 she became the first female member to take charge of a crew as ‘number one’ trainer.
During last week’s sessions our Prep 6, Year 7 and Year 8 girls tested their communication, teamwork and linking skills, navigating through the various challenges – tasked with building the tallest communication tower, or creating a prototype product that the Royal Navy would find useful on their ships. Throughout the hands-on tasks, the girls discovered the significance of embracing diversity; recognising that everyone brings a unique strength to the team. The sessions also highlighted the importance of flexibility, teaching the girls that it’s perfectly acceptable to adapt and change course when needed. Together they built robots, breakfast delivery devices, and communication towers over 6 foot high!
It was wonderful for these brilliant sessions to be led by alumna, WO Natasha Pulley – a true inspiration for our young girls.
