The competition is open to girls currently studying in Year 9 at any school in Cornwall.

How to enter

There are two categories:

Young Creative Writer

A piece of creative writing up to 2,000 words on the theme of FASCINATION.

Young Non-Fiction Writer

Up to 2,000 words on an area of FASCINATION for you.

Entries should be sent to Young Writers’ Competition, Truro High School for Girls, Falmouth Road, Truro, TR1 2HU. Entries can be submitted by email to youngwriters@trurohigh.co.uk The closing date for entries is Friday 17 December 2021.

The shortlist of prizewinners will be announced in January 2022 with young writers and their families invited to a prize-giving ceremony where winners will be announced and work will be placed on display.

Young Creative Writer

Our three top prize winners in the Young Creative Writer category will have the opportunity to take part in an exclusive writing workshop in Spring 2022 with celebrated author Emily Barr.

Emily Barr is the author of eighteen published novels and is currently working on the next two. Her first novel, Backpack, won the WHSmith New Talent award and she has since twice been nominated for the Carnegie Medal. She has written four YA novels, including the multi-award-winning The One Memory of Flora Banks, which was published in 27 languages and shortlisted
for the YA Book Prize.

Emily is an experienced creative writing teacher, and has worked for the Faber Academy, Curtis Brown Creative, Domestika and the Arvon Foundation, as well as with many individual students and small groups

Young Non-Fiction Writer

Our three top prize winners will have the opportunity to take part in an exclusive writing workshop in Spring 2022 with celebrated author Cathy Rentzenbrink.

Cathy is an acclaimed memoirist whose books include The Last Act of Love and Dear Reader. This year, she published her first fiction novel, Everyone is Still Alive. Her fourth book, Write It All Down, will be published in January 2022 and will inform readers about how to write a memoir. Cathy regularly chairs literary events, interviews authors and runs creative writing courses.

1st prize: £50 book token, copy of Bibliophile Reading Journal
2nd prize: £25 book token, copy of Bibliophile Reading Journal
3rd prize: Copy of Bibliophile Reading Journal

The Rules

• The competition is open to girls currently studying in Year 9.
• The closing date for entries is Friday 17 December 2021.
• One entry per person.
• The entrant’s work must be their own.
• The entry can be typed or written on A4 paper – please only write on one side of each sheet of paper used.
• Entries must be submitted with a complete entry form.
