Against tough competition from 358 keen mathematicians, some of whom were almost twice her age, Prep 5 Verity took first place in the Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Sumdog Maths Contest.

Three of Truro High Prep’s students placed in the top 10 in the county – Prep 6 Ornela placed 4th and Prep 6 Steren 7th – with its Prep 6 class finishing 4th and Prep 5 class placing 14th overall out of 96 classes.

There were also celebrations for Prep 6s Millie, Chloe, Maisie and Poppy who ranked in the top 50 students in Cornwall.

A number of secondary schools took part in the competition meaning that Truro High’s Prep girls were pitted against students up to and including Year 10.

Sumdog is an online games-based learning platform, accessed by thousands of pupils nationwide. In the contest, pupils have to answer up to 1000 maths questions within a week. Their score is based on the speed and accuracy of their answers with questions pitched at their appropriate learning level.

Head of Prep, Mrs Katie Hinks: “This is really fantastic – I couldn’t be prouder! Our girls perform exceptionally well in Mathematics and that’s because they absolutely love it. Maths is exciting, fun and interactive here at Truro High and competitions like this are a wonderful way to fuel our girls’ unquenchable thirst for knowledge. I would like to thank the girls’ teacher, Mrs Carveth, for organising and inspiring the Truro High team and to congratulate St Tudy and St Mabyn Primary Schools who came top overall in the competition.”

Spurred on by the girls’ success, the Prep School is entering the Sumdog National Maths Contest, which is taking place in March 2021.
