Truro High School’s Greenpower team has won a national competition to have a professional racing driver who has competed for the likes of Lotus, Ferrari and Porsche join its crew at the Greenpower International Finals.

Entrants were tasked to put together a film talking about Greenpower and their passion for motorsports engineering and judges were clearly impressed by what they heard from Truro High’s students.

Their success means the team will be joined professional racing driver Johnny Mowlem at the Greenpower International Finals at Goodwood this weekend.

Over his 30-year career, Johnny raced for some of the biggest manufacturers in motorsport, including Lotus, Ferrari and Porsche. He is a 24 Hours of Daytona GT class winner, 10-time 24 Hours of Le Mans competitor (1 GT class podium) and European Le Mans Series Champion (GTE class).

As part of the Truro High pit crew, he will be on hand to offer driving tips to the girls offering insight on everything from the best racing line and how to get the best out of their cars. They will also be able to pick his brain about life in motorsport throughout the day.

Three of the school’s cars are heading to the Greenpower International Finals, which are set to take place at Goodwood this weekend.

Alongside their packed enrichment schedule of dance lessons, sports clubs, languages workshops, enterprise projects, first aid training and so much more, students have been building the cars every week in the school’s engineering workshop since last autumn in preparation for the racing season.

As a result of its reputation for engineering, Truro High is a three-time recipient of the Spirit of Greenpower award and the only school in the country to be recognised as an official club by Motorsport UK – a first in UK automotive history which enables students to undertake specialist motorsport training and even work trackside at Formula 1 events.
