This weekend, Truro High School once again welcomed the award-winning team behind Operating Theatre Live to bring Cornwall’s students the next generation of medical event – MED-SOC.

Reviewed by the NHS as “the best academic medical experience on offer” and as “incredible and compelling” by the BBC, the day-long workshop saw students undertaking a host of clinical procedures alongside nationally acclaimed human anatomist Samuel Piri and his team.

The day offered an intensively academic insight into medical careers with sessions covering everything from technical dissection to how to prepare for the UCAT and BMAT medical admissions exams.

Truro High Future Ready Coordinator, Mrs Philippa Murray said: “What an inspiring day! The workshop was a unique opportunity for students to gain unparalleled pre-clinical training and, perhaps most importantly, to get a feel for the reality of working in surgery. Getting into medical school is tougher than ever so being able to talk about their experiences on a course like this will give these students a massive boost in their applications.”

Medical school applications have risen by 21% this year, making the fiercely fought journey to earn a place at one of the UK’s top medical schools harder than ever before.

In order to support its students’ successful applications to study these highly competitive courses, Truro High School offers a bespoke programme for Aspiring Medics. This includes a tailored calendar of lectures, workshops, mentoring and one-to-one support as well as events such as MED-SOC.

This year almost a third of the school’s Upper Sixth cohort are heading to university to begin medical courses. Three girls will be studying Medicine, one is heading to the world’s top veterinary school to study Veterinary Medicine, one is studying Paramedic Science, one Pharmacy, one Occupational therapy and another Bioengineering.
