Following the huge success of last week’s chef’s table masterclass with the former Head Chef from Fifteen Cornwall, students were shown how to recreate Persian-inspired culinary perfection with Kate.

The masterclass introduced students to dishes including butternut squash dhal, spiced noodle soup and tabbouleh.

Kate said: “I really got into cooking when I became a mum. I was stuck at home with my children and at the same time had a real sense of wanting to know about my heritage – it all lined up and I became completely obsessed and inspired.”

“It’s been lovely to come back and share that feeling. It was wonderful and the girls were fabulous. I think the programme is brilliant – anything that gives younger people more confidence in the kitchen is a hugely positive thing and something that is incredibly valuable.”

Following a number of years in London where Kate gained valuable training in the hospitality industry at Michelin starred level, she returned to Cornwall to get married and has chosen to settle here to raise her two daughters, Ava and Audrey, with her husband Will. In 2015, Kate hosted a number of supper club events from their home in Truro, showcasing Iranian food to Cornish audiences in an intimate and informal setting.

2018 saw Kate apply and become one of just 50 accepted from over 3000 applicants, to appear on BBC 1’s MasterChef. She reached the Quarterfinals and was eventually sent home with some wonderful, positive feedback from John Torode and Gregg Wallace as well as impressing food critic and writer, Jay Rayner.

Following her success, Kate has founded Sabzi, a takeaway deli in central Truro specialising in beautiful, fresh salads and juice with the highest quality filter coffee. Located in Walsingham Place, Sabzi will open its doors on Monday 2 December.

The masterclass is the first of many for the bespoke cookery programme which will welcome some of Cornwall’s most influential chefs over the coming months. These include Stephane Delourme, Head Chef at Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant for the last 21 years; Tom Hazzledine, Founder and owner of Baker Tom; Nick Evans, Head Chef Lecturer at Rick Stein’s Cookery School; and Mariana Chaves, Head Pastry Chef at Fifteen Cornwall and formerly Nuno Mendes (Chiltern Firehouse) and Le Cordon Bleu.

Students will also gain invaluable cookery skills for life and produce high skill luxury cuisine in sessions led by the programme’s leaders – Good Schools Guide Gold award-winning Food teacher Mrs Lisa Van der Lem and Cordon Bleu-trained chef Mrs Fyonah Ferris.
