Against nearly 300 youth theatre companies and 6500 young performers from across the UK, Year 11 Iris, Year 11 Madalena, Year 12 Helena and Year 12 Miriam have been selected to perform in this year’s NT Connections festival as part of the Hall for Cornwall Senior Youth Theatre group.

The 25-strong troupe is one of only 10 groups to be selected and will have the honour of closing this nationwide festival on Saturday 29 June.

Spots in the HFC Youth Theatre groups are highly sought-after and all places are currently allocated.

The selection comes as a result of a series of exceptional regional theatre performances which took place earlier this month. The HFC troupe performed The Sad Club, written by Luke Barnes with music by Adam Pleeth, at the Acorn Theatre, AMATA, Truro College and the Theatre Royal and received standing ovations for their work.

They will now take to the stage to perform at the NT’s Dorfman Theatre during the last week of June to represent the range of exciting theatrical work being produced across the UK.

Helena said: “I can’t believe it! There was only a choice of about six plays so it was really tough to stand out in the performances. It’s the first time I’ve visited the National Theatre and I’m going to be on stage there – it’s a pretty incredible feeling.”

It’s going to be a busy month for all of the girls as they balance their rehearsal schedule with revision and public examinations but they say that they are confident and definitely up for the challenge.

All keen actresses, the girls can often be found in the school’s performing arts centre leading rehearsals and practising for starring roles in student productions. They wowed audiences in this year’s school production of Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’ as well as creating a number of intricate costumes for the show as part of their Textiles portfolios.
