Greeted by rounds of applause from an audience of pupils and staff, girls from across the school blazed a trail down the catwalk as they modelled an innovative and vibrant collection of work alongside the young designers themselves.
Taking to Truro High’s catwalk were pieces inspired by the bustling international hubbub of Hong Kong, poetry by Percy Bysshe Shelley, the anarchic irreverence of Vivienne Westwood, plant lifecycles, technological revolutions, Game of Thrones and the troubled relationship between Elizabeth I and Mary Queen of Scots.
Truro High Textiles’ teacher, Mrs Gail Wieringa, said: “The work on display today really shows the incredible things that happen when imagination and an eye for detail meet. This year our GCSE pupils have moved to the same specification as our A Level designers and I’ve been so impressed by their response to this course which really maxes up their creativity and allows their imaginations to run wild. The work speaks for itself and I couldn’t be more proud.”
The showcase was particularly special for Year 13 Alice who has just received news that she has be offered a sought-after spot to study costume for performance at the London College of Fashion.
Only 7 out of every 20 applicants are accepted to take up places at this world-renowned fashion institution which ranks at number 4 in the Business of Fashion’s latest annual Global Fashion School Rankings.
75% of these places are offered to students undertaking Foundation Degree courses after they have completed their A Levels.
Alice said: “I’m really excited to be to get the chance to make costumes every day. Textiles has been a real passion of mine right since the start of Year 7 and I’m ecstatic to carry this on at university. One day, I hope to be making costumes for the Royal Ballet and I’m so excited to be one step closer to making this dream come true.”
For the past 5 years running, 100% of all grades achieved by Truro High pupils in A Level Textiles were A or A*. Pupils’ work consistently wins prizes at the prestigious CreatEd exhibition hosted by Falmouth University, which last year saw the school scooping more awards and commendations than any other institution, and recent Old Girls have gone on to study at the London College of Fashion and design for brands such as Mulberry and Karen Millen.
