8-year-old Ornela and 9-year-old Leela stormed to victory in the Regional Megafinal of the UK Chess Challenge proudly taking home the Cornwall Under 8 and Under 10 Girls Suprema titles.

This is the second time Ornela has taken this prestigious regional chess title having been crowned Under 7 Suprema a year ago.

Both girls only lost two games between them in the entire tournament which saw them face fierce competition from the county’s top young players. It was a particularly tough competition for Leela who played several games against significantly more experienced players from the Under 11 category.

The girls were joined at the championships by teammates Prep 2 Clementine, Prep 4 Cara and Prep 5 Lila, who proved themselves as formidable opponents in this regional level of competition. It was the first time competing at this level for both Clementine and Lila and all three girls were thrilled to head home with medals for their efforts.

To earn their places on the school team the girls took part in a competition organised by their chess teacher, international competitor Jeremy Menadue.

As a result of the competition, Ornela and Leela will now be heading to Twickenham this July where they will represent the school and Cornwall in the competition’s national Gigafinal.
