Last year’s Under 7 Regional Champion, Prep 3 Chloe Frankland stormed to victory scoring four wins and only one draw to claim the Cornwall Under 8 Cup. In the decisive last round, she won against the reigning County Under 7 Champion.

Newcomer Prep 4 Orla Hilliard proved herself in her first competition outside of school placing as runner-up in the Under 9s category. Orla won an outstanding three out of the four games she played winning, among other things, an interesting chess book to help her study for the next tournament.

The girls were presented with their prizes by the Cornwall Senior chess team Captain Professor David Jenkins, who was on the lookout for future county players.

As a result of that competition, the girls have both qualified for the Regional Megafinal in May.

The girls’ chess teacher, international competitor, Jeremy Menadue said: “The standard of chess played at Truro High is always impressive. The girls show great dedication to the game, many attending both our Monday and Wednesday sessions, and the improvement is clear to see. Several of our other young players will undoubtedly soon be joining Chloe and Orla after they have competed in the school championship later this month and I look forward to seeing their hard work rewarded.”
