90% of all passes at the school were at grades A*-B with more than half of the year group achieving straight A*/As in every A level exam they sat.
The school added to its reputation as a national leader in girls’ STEM education with Maths, Biology and Chemistry the most popular subjects taken and 79% of all those passes at grades A*/A.
Headmistress Sarah Matthews said: “I am beyond proud at the girls’ achievements and the way they have approached their studies with calm, resilience and determination despite the challenge of a global pandemic.”
“They leave us having completed their full A level courses, knowing they have been assessed on the whole. There are no gaps in their learning and they are more than ready to take their next steps.”
“Ensuring the girls are future ready is incredibly important to us. Our focus is not just on teaching them to jump through the academic hoops but to equip them with the skills and habits of mind they will need to thrive and not just survive. Nationally 1 in 14 students drop out during their first year at university but that is certainly not the case for girls from Truro High.”
While some students chose to take four A levels, almost a third of the year group also studied an EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) alongside their other subjects demonstrating intellectual curiosity and the ability to lead their own learning.
Sarah Matthews said: “The EPQ is a great qualification because it is self-driven and demands the kind of skills that universities are looking for. Our girls have demonstrated those across the board and I couldn’t be more delighted.”
A host of Russell Group and Top 10 universities now await the girls as they head off to destinations including Durham, Exeter, UCL, Royal Veterinary College and Edinburgh to read everything from Medicine and English Literature to French and Scandinavian Studies and Business Management.
Among those celebrating this year was 18 year old Lowena whose 3 A*s in Art, English and History, along with an A* EPQ, have secured her place at Durham University to read English Literature. She said: “I just feel slightly numb. I am so happy. Truro High has been a home to us all, a home where we come to learn and where we are all accepted for who we are so we never have to worry about anything except doing our best.”
Iris Nicholls will take her A*s in Classical Civilisation and English, an A in History and an A* EPQ with her to University College London where she will study History and Politics of the Americas.
Iris said: “I am just so glad I stayed for Sixth Form. It is such a supportive environment for learning and the small classes mean you get a lot of one to one time which really helped me.”
There was good news too for students in the school’s Lower Sixth with 100% of those sitting AS levels achieving the very highest grades A and B.
