Author of the hit fantasy series Spooks, Mr Delaney has sold over 3 million copies of his books worldwide and has recently had his debut novel The Spook’s Apprentice adapted for the big screen.

Mr Delaney, a retired English teacher, has penned more than a dozen books in the series and pupils were given the chance to question the author on his writing and the inspiration behind his best-selling works.

Inspired by the myths and folktales which surround his Lancashire home, the author urged the girls to write about the things which they find fascinating and mysterious.

He answered questions from the pupils regarding how he creates his fantastic worlds, the re-drafting and editing process, and what the future holds for his characters.

Mr Delaney also spoke to the pupils about pursuing a career as an author and the benefits of perseverance – something he was particularly familiar with having seen his books rejected dozens of times before he was finally published in 2004. His books are now read by millions of children worldwide.

Head of Humanities & Enterprise, Mr George Ford said: “Lectures like this offer a fantastic insight for our pupils inspiring them to think big and make their creative writing dreams a reality. Joseph’s story is truly inspiring and there was a real buzz amongst our budding bookworms as they left the session, many with signed copies of books from the author himself.”

The visit was organised in association with Truro Waterstones.
