Year 8 Melissa, from Perranwell, has been selected to compete with the England U15 Sabre team.

This is the second national call-up for the young fencer who competed with the U13 squad earlier this year.

Melissa’s call up comes after she was ranked 6th nationally in her age group.

She will now travel with the England team to Poland next March to take part in Challenge Wratislavia. This prestigious tournament will see top young fencers from across the world coming together to throw down the gauntlet on an international stage.

Melissa started fencing when she was just six years old using a soft foam sabre. She trains with Truro Fencing Club at the club’s headquarters in town.

It’s a busy time for the young fencer who last month won bronze in an U13s competition as well as competing in her first cadet U17 competition and finished L16.

Excited mum Allison said “We are incredibly proud of Melissa’s achievement. She has worked very hard throughout the year, both on her fitness as well as her fencing. She has competed in many competitions across the country and to be selected for the England U15 squad is absolutely amazing!”
