An enterprising 11-year-old from Truro High School for Girls has just won a national business award which recognises her company as being a force for good.

Against 26,000 young entrepreneurs, Year 7 Maisie scooped the ‘Fiver for Good’ award in the Young Enterprise National Fiver Challenge Competition finals.

Maisie founded ‘Maisie’s Cakes and Shakes’ as part of the ‘Fiver Challenge’ – an enterprise project involving every student in the school’s Prep 6 class. The challenge tasked students to come up with a business idea and turn a profit in four weeks using an initial investment of just £5.

As part of her challenge, Maisie decided to put a big focus on how locally minded, eco-friendly and sustainable her business was. This ranged from using as many locally grown ingredients as possible to donating a proportion of her profits to the Children’s Hospice South West.

Maisie said: “Making sure my business was sustainable and environmentally-friendly was really important to me and so was donating to charity. I chose the children’s hospice because I wanted to support sick children with life-threatening conditions and the fantastic work the charity does. The hospice is a small local charity and I know how difficult it has been for it to fundraise to the levels it was able to before the pandemic – I just wanted to do my part to help.”

The ‘Fiver Challenge’ project was part of Truro High School’s Future Ready Programme which provides girls of all ages with the opportunities to learn new life skills, develop business acumen and be prepared to thrive in the future.

It’s not the first time the school’s students have celebrated national success as part of the project. In 2019, Plum and Daisy, now both in Year 9, scooped the Highest Profit award in the 9-11-year-old category at the Fiver Challenge national finals.
