Year 13 Lowena is celebrating having received offers to read English from Durham, Exeter and York – all part of the Russell Group and UK Top 10.

Durham’s English department is 2nd in the UK according to the Guardian Good University Guide 2021 and 90% of its English research activity was judged to be ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ in the most recent government Research Excellence Framework (REF) assessment.

Ranked 4th in the UK in the Times Good University Guide 2021, York had the highest proportion of ‘world-leading’ (4*) research of all UK English departments in the most recent government REF assessment.

Exeter is home to one of the leading English departments in the UK, placing in the Top 10 in all UK university league tables and 4th in the UK for research power in English.

Lowena said: “It feels great to get these offers. I think the things that were most helpful to my application were the EPQ qualification which proved a dedication to English as well as LAMDA, as my studies provided a unique perspective on literature and helped to develop my analysis of text. Of course, the opportunity to run the school newspaper was also important.”

Alongside studying English Literature, History and Art at A Level, Lowena has written and illustrated a book to help children deal with anxiety and concern as part of the EPQ, founded a student newspaper, achieved Grade 8 in LAMDA and frequently read with Pre-Prep pupils to help improve their literacy skills.

A keen dancer, Lowena has also been choreographing and leading rehearsals for large group routines for the school’s annual dance show since she was 15-years-old.
