The success went right across the board with the Prep School team earning the overall championship title in the IET Formula Goblin Competition as well as winning Gold in the Sprint and Gold and Silver in the Drag Race.
The girls also won a special award for Best Presented Team, an accolade which recognizes the crew which demonstrates the greatest level of professionalism and teamwork on the day.
There were also celebrations for the school’s Senior team which won Gold and Silver for its Kernow Kittz and Green Gladiator cars in the F24+ Category at the event – another step towards the school’s cars earning their places in this year’s International Final at Goodwood.
Competition was fierce with teams coming from all across the country to take part in the event.
Head of STEM, Mr Jon Dean said: “The girls were excellent on the track, their teamwork and determination were fantastic. Greenpower is all about working together and encouraging each other to do your very best and I was so impressed by the way the girls led yesterday – apart from a small amount of help from teachers, they worked entirely independently. In fact, even though they were competing in a different championship, the Senior team all took on the role of being ‘big sisters’ to the Prep girls. As always, I am so proud of them.”
Alongside their packed enrichment schedule of dance lessons, sports clubs, languages workshops, enterprise projects, first aid training and so much more, the girls – some of whom are as young as seven – have been building the cars every week in the school’s engineering workshop since the autumn in preparation for the Greenpower race season.
As a result of its reputation for engineering, Truro High is a three-time recipient of the Spirit of Greenpower award and the only school in the country to be recognised as an official club by Motorsport UK – a first in UK automotive history which enables students to undertake specialist motorsport training and even work trackside at Formula 1 events.
