Against tough competition from 25,484 keen mathematicians from across the UK, some of whom were more than twice their age, our Prep 4 class took 3rd place, the Prep 5 class 8th and the Prep 6 class 9th in England in the National Sumdog Maths Contest. We are the only school in Cornwall to make the Top 10.
It is a particularly proud moment for our Prep 6 pupils who were also crowned the competition’s daily winner on March 14.
A number of secondary schools took part in the competition meaning that Truro High’s Prep girls were pitted against students up to and including Year 9.
The Prep School’s national success follows our girls being crowned top in the county in the latest Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Contest. The Prep 4 class took 1st place, the Prep 6 class 2nd and the Prep 5 class 7th. Our students monopolised the Cornwall Top 10 with Prep 5 Verity placing 3rd, Prep 6 Ornela 4th and Prep 4 Bella 6th.
Sumdog is an online games-based learning platform, accessed by thousands of pupils nationwide. In the contest, pupils have to answer up to 1000 maths questions within a week. Their score is based on the speed and accuracy of their answers with questions pitched at their appropriate learning level.
Head of Prep, Mrs Katie Hinks said: “I am just bursting with pride. The momentum over the course of the week has just been absolutely wonderful and the girls have been beyond excited to take part. The competition has been all they can talk about and it’s so exciting to see this enthusiasm for maths across the board – every girl is excited about maths and every girl has wanted to do her very best. It’s been a real team effort and the collaboration to reach this remarkable and truly monumental achievement has been incredible.”
