It is a tremendous achievement for the girls’ school which is also the only school in Cornwall to be shortlisted for the prestigious Independent School of the Year Awards due to its excellent holistic education.
Headmistress Sarah Matthews said: “We are incredibly proud of each and every individual. Our results are the culmination of two years of hard work and determination by the girls and their efforts have been rewarded and we could not be more delighted.”
“It has been a nail-biting time waiting for the results but, despite some adjustments, our girls are still going on to fulfil their bold and ambitious hopes and dreams.”
Truro High has campaigned nationally about the importance of promoting well-being and building strong mental health and has previously been critical of league tables which only recognise the efforts of those who achieve the very highest grades.
Pushed to give details of this year’s results, Mrs Matthews said: “All of our girls worked very hard. Whilst more than 85% of all our passes were at grades A*/A, which is three times the national average, we know that people can be blinded by that statistic and we are just as proud of those girls who will today be taking home a B in a subject where they never dreamed of achieving that level of success. It is the growth and progress that makes us so very proud as teachers.”
With an overall pass rate of 100%, Truro High’s students performed brilliantly in every single subject. In more than half of all subjects studied – Business Studies, English, Further Mathematics, French, Geography, Music, Physics, Spanish and Textiles – all girls achieved grades A*/A.
More than a quarter of the year group were offered unconditional university places with 100% of students achieving the grades required to meet the offers from their first choice universities – many of them Russell Group or Top 10 universities. The girls are now heading off to study subjects including Astrophysics, Law, Medicine, Accounting, Animal Behaviour, Modern Languages, History and Performing Arts.
Former Head Girl Charlotte Rutherfoord is heading off to top drama school Mountview Academy for Performing Arts and said: “I have such happy memories of Truro High and will always look back on my days here with fondness. It’s been such a good experience and today’s results are just a wonderful surprise.”
Charlie Barnecutt is heading for Bristol University to study Medicine and said: “After a strange few months I am just so glad it has ended in this way and I can now start as I mean to go on at university. My results have shocked me, but in a good way!”
Commenting on the school’s success, Sarah Matthews said: “The girls have thoroughly embraced all the academic enrichment activities available to them at Truro High that so often lead to enhanced grades but also mean they leave us with so much more than just their results. These girls have all contributed to the school, and grown as leaders, in a whole variety of ways including on the sports field, assisting in Prep School, conducting the school choirs, choreographing the dance show and taking part in our many different productions.”
“Academically we could not be more proud and we are celebrating with the girls. This year’s system was new to us all and, as a school, we expected the best but prepared for the worst – all our A Level courses were completed in full with many of the girls also taking Pre-university courses in the subjects that interested them most. Our Year 13s leave us as smart, confident, resilient young women who have the ability and the qualifications to achieve their dreams and we cannot wait to see what they do next.”
