As part of the Learn Challenge Curriculum, the school’s Pre-Prep pupils have been considering the question, “Can a piece of furniture be extraordinary?”, and, with the virtual support of their teacher, Miss Mills, have used this topic as a springboard for some incredibly exciting learning adventures.

Having read and analysed “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”, the class has progressed to studying “The Mermaid of Zennor” and now “The Princess and the Pea”. This week, they have studied Mini Grey’s version of the tale and thought about the story from the pea’s perspective including writing newspaper articles and wanted posters. This has inspired work across the curriculum and the girls have had the opportunity to research Roman and Egyptian beds, add colour to their own “Bedroom in Arles” piece of Art, design the Queen a bed as a STEM activity and have a go at making a delicious pea soup.

Miss Mills said: “Since we have begun our online lessons, the girls have adapted to the new style of learning and have been even more inventive and creative than usual. The use of video chat has been an area which the girls have shone in and I have seen underwater sea gardens placed in the bath and a mermaid being interviewed in the kitchen through to a full-scale production of “The Little Mermaid”, which was entirely designed and scripted by an enthusiastic learner!”

“The contact is fantastic and has meant that, as well as showing me their work, we can read together, listen to music sessions and even learn how to play cricket!”
