Girls from Year 7 to Year 13 joined in the fun with themed costumes in tribute to everything ranging from Little Women, Harry Potter, The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Alice in Wonderland to Dork Diaries and The Tiger who came to Tea.

Year 9 Lottie even came in homage to Flora Banks, a character created by her mum and published author Emily Barr.

World Book Day is always close to our hearts and offers our young bookworms another chance to show off their love of reading. Special activities included a literary quiz while buddy reading between Sixth Form and Pre-Prep gave our older girls the chance to revisit some of their favourite childhood books.

Our Sixth Form students regularly read with our younger pupils in order to help build their confidence and share the joy of literature together.

The day comes as students at THS Prep continue their challenge to read 140 books to celebrate the school’s 140th birthday.

New research from the National Literacy Trust (NLT) has revealed that only 26% of under-18s spend time reading every day, the lowest level the NLT has recorded since 2005 but this certainly isn’t the case at Truro High.

Bucking this national trend, students throughout the school are encouraged to challenge themselves with the books they read and share their experiences together. Many girls have significantly higher than average reading ages, some of which are double their actual age, and teachers regularly advise them on the titles which will stretch their reading ability.
