Newcastle is part of the prestigious Russell Group and both rank in the UK’s top 10 universities for modern languages in the Guardian University Guide 2020.

The 17-year-old’s impressive application has also resulted in offers from Russell Group universities, Manchester and Leeds. With a wealth of options to choose from, she is now in the process of deciding which offer to take up.

Maya said: “It’s a great position to be in, now I’ve just got to pick. The languages department has been so supportive especially with the one-to-one mentoring in my conversation classes – it’s all made such a dramatic improvement in my skills. Projects like the mini assistants work experience have also been great – there’s nothing like the total immersion of working in a foreign primary school.”

Alongside her studies, Maya acts as a school Languages Ambassador and regularly leads younger pupils in linguistic clubs and projects.

When she’s not leading from the front in the Languages department, Maya can often be found training in the dance studio.

On top of achieving a raft of dance qualifications over the last few years, she has led rehearsals and choreographed a number of pieces for the school’s annual Dance Show LIVE! This autumn, Maya earned the Gold Arts Award as a result of her hard work on stage and in the studio.
