Sarah Matthews said the girls could now reap the fruits of their labour as they head off to some of the UK’s top universities to study subjects ranging from medicine to mechanical engineering, textile design, psychology and criminology.
Last year the school made headlines after it was ranked the number one Small Independent School in England for its A Level results with 59% of all passes at A* or A. This year it used that platform to announce it would not be publishing its results saying the growing culture of comparison was becoming increasingly damaging to young people’s mental health.
Sarah Matthews explained: “Results day has, as always, brought some fantastic stories of success and lots of tears of joy but we feel very strongly about the need to celebrate the girls’ individual achievements rather than to broadcast the overall success of the school.”
“We strongly believe in a growth mind-set and we don’t wish to undermine the journey of hard work, determination and growth that all our girls undertake, whether they reach the impressive heights of the A and A* or not. We must ensure we celebrate equally the students who have absolutely worked their socks off to move from a D grade to a B grade, as this achievement and personal journey is just as phenomenal.”
Among those collecting their results was Kitty Piccin-White who will soon be heading to Loughborough University to study Mechanical Engineering. Her father Rob commented: “We are fantastically proud. She has achieved what she wanted to achieve to get into her first-choice university and we are so pleased for her.”
Whilst most students were at school this morning to celebrate their A Level Results, boarder Coco Sham was jumping for joy on the other side of the world. A talented dancer, Coco balanced a busy training schedule alongside her studies and is now applying to study Physiotherapy in Australia.
She said: “It’s a huge relief and I’m so happy with my grades. Lots of my school friends have come to visit so we’re definitely going to be celebrating!
Saskia McLean is heading to Falmouth University to study Fashion Design and equally delighted was Megan White who returned to Truro High just one year ago to study Textiles. She is now off to De Montfort University to study Contour Fashion and said: “I am just so glad I came back to Truro High because I definitely wouldn’t have got an A* otherwise. I would just like to thank my teacher for all she has done. She has been amazing.”
There were celebrations too for the school’s Year 12 students who today opened the results of their AS levels to discover all their hard work had most certainly paid off.
