Part of the school’s comprehensive university and careers programme, Mike Nicholson, the Director of Student Recruitment and Admissions at the University of Bath, led the talk which aimed to demystify the university application process for Year 11 and 12 students and their families.

Formerly Director of Undergraduate Admissions & Outreach at the University of Oxford, Mr Nicholson provided an expert insight into the breath and variety of degree courses available, what universities are looking for and how to go about making the strongest application possible.

With a call to thoroughly investigate their options and follow their passions, Mr Nicholson urged students, especially in Year 11, to take the opportunity to start researching and preparing as early as possible to help them stand out from the crowd on the course that’s right for them.

He also advised students to consider the realities of living away from home for the first time and to tool themselves up with essential life skills including cooking, budgeting and laundry.

Headmistress Mrs Sarah Matthews said: “It may seem early to be mentioning the application process, especially for students in Year 11, but the step up to A Level is challenging for even the most able of students. Whilst we know our Sixth Form have the advantage of working with staff who know them and who can provide the individual support they need, it is also essential that the girls begin to play their part early, by putting in the additional preparation and accessing opportunities that will provide the competitive edge.

“We firmly believe that our determination to provide opportunities such as this is why so many of our students achieve their ambitions to study at Russell Group and Top 10 universities and I hope the talk has inspired our girls to see how their goals can be realised and be pro-active in working with us to find ways of supporting them.”

The lecture launched a packed calendar of events this term which aim to prepare the school’s students for the future.

Truro High is the highest ranked small independent school in England for A Level results and places consistently in the top 5% of all schools nationally for value-added.
