Against 1000s of entries from across the country, Year 7 Lola was selected as one of the 50 best poets in the national competition.

The competition – named after famous poet Sir John Betjeman – was open to children aged 10 to 13 and called on entrants to write a poem on the theme of ‘place’.

Lola said that her poem was in memory of her second cousin who sadly passed away a few years ago.

Lola said: “It felt amazing to be shortlisted, I wasn’t expecting it at all. The poem is very special to me and when I found out that it would be published it really lifted me to up to be able to share it with so many people.”

As a result of her success, the young poet’s work will now be published in an anthology of poetry alongside the other top 50 entries.

Headmistress Mrs Sarah Matthews said: “I am absolutely delighted that Lola’s poetry has received this accolade. Competitions like this highlight the importance of the Arts in encouraging personal expression – a focus which is sadly on the decline in education nationwide but certainly not a Truro High School.”

This prestigious competition was this year judged by Scottish Laureate Jackie Kay and acclaimed British poet Zaffar Kunial.
