Girls from all across the school, staff and parents spent a jam-packed day cheering each other on in everything from sprints to javelin and from the dressing up race to welly throwing.

Director of Sport, Ms Kat Barbery-Redd said her top three highlights of the day were seeing the school’s Year 9 and 10 runners clock up new school relay records, Pre-Prep parents taking to the track for a hotly-contested skipping race and 12-year-old Melissa smashing the Year 7 javelin record.

She said: “Sport is an important part of school life with all girls encouraged to get involved and try new things, so it’s been fantastic to see everyone really getting in the spirit of the day whether they are a county champion or simply having fun with their friends. Today is a real celebration of another incredible year of sporting success at school but it’s also a fantastic reminder that sport is for everyone and it’s been great to see all the girls getting their chance to shine.”

Sports Day marks the end of another year of phenomenal sporting success at Truro High. The last year has seen six of the school’s hockey teams crowned county champions – that’s one for every age group that competes –, two netball teams take county titles, both football teams get through to the county cup semi-finals in their first competitive year and the school’s Prep 6 swimmers crowned as Cornwall primary county champions.

The school also has its fair share of superstars amongst its pupils including 15 girls representing the county at England Hockey’s Junior Development Centre, 2 representing UK Lions in international hockey tournaments, 1 player in the top 5% in England hockey performance centre and 3 girls selected for Cornwall’s satellite netball training centre.

Pupils also hold county athletics titles in U17 80m hurdles, U13 75m hurdles, U17 discus, U15 shot, U17 long jump, U15 javelin, U13 javelin and U17 shot.

Many made a day of it with lunch on the lawns and the school’s PTA were extremely impressed by the entries in their Posh Picnic competition. Huge congratulations to the Hancocks who again took home a top prize alongside the Edwards family.

Expert judges, Will and Nicola Marsden from Pencoose Pantry, were blown away by these two wonderful feasts which included homemade elderflower cordial, a special Sports Day cake, wicker hampers and even crystal champagne flutes. They were incredibly impressed by the huge range of entries and also gave a special mention to Headmaster Dr Moodie’s homemade quiches and an entry that comprised of a huge number of blankets joined together to create one huge community picnic.

The PTA, led by Mary Hodgson and Lora Prynn, also put in sterling service on the refreshments and ice-cream bar with hundreds of cups of tea and ice lollies consumed over the course of the day.

The school would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who made this fantastic day possible.
