Dr Suzie Imber will be inspiring the next generation of space travellers as she spends the day leading hands-on workshops and talks on space science at the school. The space scientist will also talk about the incredible journey that led her to win the BBC’s search to find the best candidate to send to outer space.
This star-studded day will take place on Tuesday 30 January. It will involve Truro High School pupils of all ages as well as schoolchildren from across the county.
Dr Imber, who is an associate professor in space physics at Leicester University, triumphed over 11 other contestants to win the BBC’s ‘Astronauts: Do you have what it takes?’ programme.
She was put through a series of gruelling tests by former astronaut Chris Hadfield, who was so impressed by her performance that he has formally recommended her to join the European Space Agency.
Hoping to inspire the public to match her success, she is visiting various parts of the UK to talk about her experiences and to promote space exploration. Truro High is the only school in the county to be hosting Dr Imber on her upcoming visit to Cornwall, which will also see her heading to Goonhilly Earth Station.

The school is a firm believer in educating girls about the many opportunities Astronomy can offer, regularly undertaking special astronomical projects and hosting hands-on workshops involving school children from across the county. In partnership with the Roseland Observatory, it is the first school in the UK to have a solar observatory.
