From recipes with local crab to Thai green curry inspired treats, the contestants competed to create a dozen mini quiches in under an hour and half.

Emma Selwood, from Bosvigo; Matilda Bennett, from Kea; Jemima Vitulli, from St Uny; and Angus McDonald, from Constantine won the round beating a strong field of entries which were all declared “utterly delicious” by the judging panel.

Dominique Ruttledge, from Truro High School; Jonah Little, from St Hilary; Amelia Lanyon, from Devoran; and Kaia Sawalha, from Connor Downs, also competed in the round and were complimented on their “impressive pastry work” by Head Judge, Mrs Lisa van der Lem.

The young bakers had proven themselves against nearly 200 children from fifteen local schools in the search for Cornwall’s best young baker to reach in the semi-final.

The competition has been organised by Truro High School for Girls and is open to young bakers in Years 5 & 6. The young bakers will now take on the best of the rest in the Grand Final where they will be set one final baking challenge by Cornish bread-making supremo Baker Tom who will also be judging the bakes.

The winner will receive a fabulous prize for themselves and their whole class will be invited to take part in a half-day food workshop, including cooking and food science, at Truro High School during the summer term. Truro High is the top school in Cornwall for GCSE and A level and is ranked within the Top 1% of schools in the UK for value added at A level.
