Competing against students from nearly 20 schools and colleges from across the county, Truro High’s pupils scooped an award and two honorary commendations.

Hundreds of students from Year 11 and 13 showcased a range of high profile creative work at the prestigious event, including Product Design, Film & Animation, Literature, Fine Art, Music, Photography and Journalism.

Year 11s Calypso Squibb, Elena Salvoni and Giselle Parnall received the ‘Journalism’ award for their exposé on substance abuse in Cornwall. Even more impressive, the girls researched and wrote the piece in a day as part of the BBC School Report news event.

The judges praised the young reporters for their impactful text which was full of vitality and who at “only just 16 [are] already, like all good journalists, questioning the status quo and wanting to put the world to rights”.

Year 12 Rebe Winn received a commendation in the ‘Fashion & Textiles’ category for her Alexander McQueen-inspired high fashion piece which explores the theme of ‘Vanitas’: a style of artwork designed to remind the viewer of their mortality. As the result of an international art competition, Rebe’s artwork on the same theme was recently featured in a collection of curated pieces on display in the Tate Modern.

Fellow Year 12 pupil Grace Ingram received a commendation in the same category for her Cubist inspired trapeze dress which transformed her model into a vibrant living collage.

The CreatEd Exhibition is the only show in the UK which exhibits the creative talents of students from schools and colleges together. Judges are invited in from leading industries to award prizes in all categories.

Head of Textiles, Mrs Gail Wieringa said: “Creativity is at the heart of everything we do at Truro High from the art and textiles to journalism and creative writing. The range of work on show at CreatEd really reflects this, and I am thrilled that the girls’ talent and hard work has been once again celebrated this prestigious event.”
