From recipes with sweet peppers to bacon-filled savoury treats, the contestants competed to create a dozen inventive mini quiches in under an hour and half. A real test of technical skill, the young bakers were challenged to create their pastry from scratch.

Sam Galligan, from Cusgarne School; Megan Dyer, from Mawnan Smith; Lilly-Grace, from Mylor Bridge; and Nia Edwards, from Truro High School, won the round beating a strong field of eight entries which were all declared “extremely professional” by the judging panel.

Dulcie Power, from Archbishop Benson; Esme Brokenshire, from King Charles; Ffion Chamberlain, from St Francis; and Rocco Richards from St Wenn, Bodmin also competed in the round and were complimented on their “inventive and daring recipes” by Head Judge, Mrs Lisa van der Lem.

The young bakers had proven themselves against nearly 200 children from fifteen local schools in the search for Cornwall’s best young baker to reach in the semi-final.

The competition has been organised by Truro High School for Girls and is open to young bakers in Years 5 & 6. After the second round this Friday, they will take on the best of the rest in the Grand Final where they will be set one final baking challenge by Cornish bread-making supremo Baker Tom who will also be judging the bakes.

The winner will receive a fabulous prize for themselves and their whole class will be invited to take part in a half-day food workshop, including cooking and food science, at Truro High School during the summer term. Truro High is the top school in Cornwall for GCSE and A level and is ranked within the Top 1% of schools in the UK for value added at A level.
