Characters leapt off the page and into the classroom as pupils were encouraged to go to lessons dressed as their favourite fictional alter egos for the day and there were a wide variety of costumes on show, from Iorek Bynison – the armoured polar bear from Phillip Pullman’s Northern Lights – to an entire Year 11 class dressed as characters from Alice in Wonderland.

The festivities culminated in a highly competitive costume contest with categories including most creative costume, best comedy character, best villain, best sci-fi character, best mythological character and best group.

Never to miss at chance at dressing up, teaching staff also got in on the fun with a hotly contested best teacher costume category.

Pupils’ love of reading was also put to the test at a lunchtime literature quiz with lots of prizes and house points up for grabs.

Mrs Kathy Pooley, teacher and school librarian said, “Our bookworms have really got into the spirit of World Book Day and shown that fantastic worlds don’t just live on the page. With so many different characters walking the corridors, today’s festivities have been a brilliant way to get our pupils’ imaginations fired up and share the joy of reading.”

The award-winning independent girls’ school is one of thousands across the UK and Ireland marking the occasion by showing how magical books can be.

World Book Day aims to help children explore the pleasure of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own. To mark the day, all school children are entitled to receive a World Book Day £1 book token. It can be exchanged for one of ten specially published World Book Day £1—including The Dinosaur that Pooped A Lot! by Tom Fletcher & Dougie Poynter, illustrated by Garry Parsons, Goth Girl and the Pirate Queen by Chris Riddell, Best Mates by Michael Morpurgo —or is redeemable against any book or audio book of their choice costing £2.99 or more at a participating bookshop or book club.
