For the second year running Prep 4 pupil, Celeste Woodall, has been crowned Cornwall’s Under 9 Chess Champion at the Regional Megafinal of the UK Chess Challenge. Celeste won an outstanding five out of the six games she played.

Truro High’s youngest competitive player, Prep 2 pupil, Chloe Frankland stormed to victory winning the Under 7 Girls Trophy, which also involved playing in a combined section with the more experienced Under 8s. This is only the second time Chloe has competed outside of the school.

The girls’ chess teacher, international competitor, Jeremy Menadue said: “Celeste and Chloe work so hard at Chess Club it was wonderful to see them get their just rewards, two shiny trophies to keep and the chance to represent Cornwall on a national platform.”

As a result of the competition, in addition to winning their way through to the regional championship, both girls have qualified for the National Gigafinal to be played in Reading on the first weekend in July.

The offering of Chess at Truro High is ever growing. Both players attend both the Prep School Chess Club and the new School Chess Group which is open to players of all ages providing the opportunity to hone their skills in one of the world’s most played games.
