A Level Results 2018

Cornwall’s top school is celebrating another year of outstanding exam results with 59% of all A level passes at the very top grades of A*/A – more than double the national average of 26%.

Truro High School for Girls once again achieved a 100% pass rate overall with an astonishing 83% of passes at grades A*-B.

23% of all passes were graded A* – nearly three times the national average of 8%.

The success has come across the board for staff and pupils with every student who sat exams in Music, Maths, Latin, French, Textiles, Chinese and Further Maths awarded either an A* or an A.

The School offers 20 different subjects at A Level and in 13 of those subjects, at least half of all passes were graded A*/A. The result is that 94% of students are now heading off to the universities of their choice including Oxford, Warwick, York and London College of Fashion.

The results have been praised by new Headmistress, Mrs Sarah Matthews, who said: “I am absolutely delighted to have joined a school where the combination of dedicated teaching and diligent students has achieved such incredible success. Many of these girls have also used their time at Truro High to achieve gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards, train as lifeguards and acquire qualifications enabling them to teach English as a foreign language. It is these additional skills, along with their tremendous academic results, that will stand them in excellent stead in the years to come.”

Top grades for scientist and talented artist, Bennath

Among those picking up their results was Bennath who gained 3A*s in Chemistry, Maths and Physics. Also a talented artist, Bennath has worked with younger pupils at the school over the last year to create a series of murals in the Prep School changing rooms. She will now take up a place at York University to read Natural Sciences.

Oxford’s dreaming spires call for Eugenie

Heading for Oxford University to read History and English is talented actress and theatre producer Eugenie who achieved A* in English and As in French and History.

She said: “I’m very relieved and unbelievably happy. I’m so looking forward to Oxford but, at the same time, it’s very sad to be leaving the school.”

Rosalind forgoes picking up results to take on a new challenge abroad

Whilst most of our students were at school this morning to celebrate their A Level Results, one Sixth Former forwent picking up hers to take on a new challenge abroad.

There were celebrations for Rosalind Williams after collecting A*in English, Maths and Physics as well as a grade A in Latin.

Rosalind wasn’t here to pick up her results in person as she has set herself the challenge of learning to speak German fluently as she spends a year travelling and teaching English abroad before applying to university. She is currently working in Hamburg for a month where she is mastering the language and planning to not speak any English at all.

Tears of joy for Deputy Head Girl, Nell

Deputy Head Girl Nell burst into tears of joy on achieving 2 A*s and 1 A, in addition to her A* in the Extended Project Qualification. Her father Robert paid tribute to the school saying: “Stunning results but it’s more than just about the grades. Nell has come out of Truro High as a mature, rounded and positive person with tons of ambition and a great future and a lot of that we owe to the school.”

Olympic hopeful rifle-shooter hits the target with her grades

Also hitting the target with her grades is Olympic hopeful rifle-shooter Alice who will be studying at Falmouth University after achieving A*s in Art and Textiles and a B in Theatre Studies. Alice has been accepted straight from school onto the Textile Design course without the need to complete the usual foundation course.

Year 12 Ezgi achieves 100% perfect score

Getting in some practice ahead of next year was Ezgi who opened her AS level Religious Philosophy envelope to discover she had passed her exam without dropping a single mark – a perfect 100% in every paper.

She said: “I’m so happy I could almost scream. I want to study medicine at university so the work I have done on ethics has given me a fantastic foundation for the studies that lie ahead.”
