The zoo is currently struggling to raise enough funds to care for its animals during lockdown. It counts 87 species amongst more than 400 animals, all of which require specialist care from trained zookeepers every day.

Fiona said: “I did a week of work experience at the zoo last August and this has inspired us to raise money for this charity. On average, the zoo has to raise £11,500 a week to care for the animals and this is usually done through fundraising events and admissions from visitors.”

“However closing to the public due to Covid-19 has caused them to lose hundreds of thousands of pounds in critical funding. We, therefore, want to help ensure that the Zoo will be able to re-open after lockdown.”

The siblings are running the marathon today, Thursday 28, Friday 29 and Saturday 30 May.

Fiona is undertaking the challenge as part of the school’s 140th anniversary campaign.
