Truro High chess players take county championships by storm

Truro High Prep Chess Club was strongly represented at Cornwall Junior Chess Championships earlier this month with several of the school's top players competing.

Former ‘Under 8 Best Girl’ Cornwall Junior Chess champion, Prep 4 Victoria Stolte proved herself a force to be reckoned in the tournament and proudly headed home with the ‘Under 9 Girls’ county champion trophy under her arm.

The victory was made all the sweeter by the fact that Victoria narrowly missed out on this hotly-contested title earlier in the year.

Her teammates also put in some fantastic performances with Prep 6 Orla Hilliard finishing in the top half of an extremely tough Under 11 section and Prep 3 Ornela Mallick taking a podium place in the Under 8 Girls category.

It was Ornela’s first competitive outing since she represented the school and Cornwall in the UK Chess Challenge’s national Gigafinal in the summer and young player was certainly on fine form once again.

The championship was a first for the school’s youngest competitive player, Prep 2 Clementine Carter, who proved her prowess against some extremely tough competition and only just missed out on the Best Newcomer in the Under 7s category.

The girls’ chess teacher, international competitor, Jeremy Menadue said: “The standard of chess played at Truro High is always impressive and I’m delighted that the girls’ hard work has been rewarded. It’s fantastic to see the girls thriving at competitions such as this and making lots of friends along the way. A huge well done to all the girls and a special mention goes to Sixth Former Zoe Williams who has been invaluable help in getting the girls’ competition ready every week.”
