Semi-Final Appearance on Songs of Praise for Prep School Choir
The choir was just one of six nationally to be selected for the semi-final which was recorded in Liverpool. Forty pupils and accompanying staff and parents endured an eight hour journey to take part but the girls’ performance, which was broadcast on Sunday, made all the effort worthwhile.
Under the musical direction of teacher Julie Ellis, who entered the choir for the competition, the nine to eleven year olds gave the hymn ‘Purify My Heart’ their all – impressing celebrity judges Susie Digby, a world renowned conductor, vocal coach David Grant and musician Mylene Klass.
“Very professional and focused”, was how Mylene described their singing, whilst Susie Digby said she was “particularly impressed with how well blended the sound was” and summarising it as “a beautiful, beautiful performance”.
The Truro High School choir was introduced by presenter Aled Jones and was the first to perform.
“I couldn’t be more proud of them,” said the Prep School Headmistress Alison Miller. “The competition was very intense and the standard exceptionally high.
“Unfortunately they weren’t one of the three choirs selected for the final but, to be honest, being in the top six was achievement enough – particularly at the first attempt. Julie Ellis has done a fantastic job preparing them and I’d like to congratulate her and everyone else involved. It’s been an amazing experience.”
