High School Old Girl’s Big Fat Gypsy Weddings
Julie Watson, who attended the top-rated school between 1989 and 1996, is credited as DV Director on the C4 show, a job which sees her filming the action as it unfolds around her.
Julie’s desire to work in the film and television industry was nurtured during her school-days by her English teacher, Neil Fee. They shared an interest in film and he often loaned her classic films, fuelling her passion for the medium.
“All the teachers were excellent, but Mr Fee was such an inspiration,” Julie said. “We shared an interest in film and he would lend me iconic films – then we’d share our views about them. During lessons he could always put a contemporary twist on whatever we were studying, which really enthused us. I have such happy memories of the High School.”
After leaving Truro High Sixth Form, Julie developed her media interest by going on to take an honours degree in Media Production with Photography at the University of Luton. She then went on to spend several years working on documentaries at BBC Manchester and as a freelance researcher and assistant producer.
Julie, who now lives in London and works as a freelancer, joined the Big Fat Gypsy Weddings team in April last year with filming going through most of the rest of the year. The series has created a storm of media interest and is one of the most watched C4 documentary series ever. She now hopes to soon be directing her own documentary films.
Truro High School Headmistress, Caroline Pascoe said: “We always welcome news of our ‘old girls’ and this news is particularly exciting. Julie certainly seems to have achieved great success in her career and looks set to build on that. We are all very proud of her. Mr Fee retired a few years ago but Julie has asked to be put in touch with him to thank him for taking an interest in her and being such an inspiration – I’m sure he’ll be delighted.”
