What’s it about?

Women have made important contributions throughout the history of astronomy, and many of the rising stars of astronomy today are female. This talk will give a lightning overview of women in astronomy, past and present, their stories, the challenges they’ve faced, the discoveries they’ve made and the opportunities for girls starting a career in astronomy today.

Speaker: Anita Heward

Communications Manager Twinkle Space Mission; Outreach Coordinator, Europlanet Research Infrastructure.

Anita has more than 15 years’ experience in promoting space and astronomy research. As a freelance science communicator, she works for a wide range of organisations including Europlanet, the Royal Astronomical Society and the Twinkle Space Mission. She has run the press office for more than 20 national and international scientific conferences.

Anita worked on the International Year of Astronomy 2009, ‘She is an Astronomer’ Cornerstone Project, and is a supporter of initiatives to increase gender equality in science and engineering.
